Minimizing Losses in Texas Holdem

What new Texas Holdem players must learn very early on is that the keys to winning involves maximizing wins and, equally important, maintaining the losses to a minimum. The concept of winning is something that all players are familiar with, but you must also be aware of how to keep those losses down.

Simply stated, your Texas Holdem strategy and management of your bank roll will be determined not just by how you win but also how many times you lose. Winning that $1,000 pot is great, but if you have been losing $200 pots for ten consecutive sessions, then you are in the red.

Just as there are Texas Holdem strategy and tactics for winning, there are also techniques that you must be aware of to ensure that you are doing the best you can to keep your losses down.

The first, and most important thing that you will need to know is when to fold. For example, if you are holding a K7 and the Texas Holdem flop gives you a KA3, you should fold your hand. Forget the pair of Kings that you see there; that hand is only good for the pre flop, but in this case, where there is an Ace on board, the odds are someone has it, particularly if it is a multi way pot.

In addition, you have a weak kicker; even if there was not an Ace there, your kicker will be beaten by someone holding a bigger hand. This is usually the case in tight Texas Holdem games.

Another way that you can reduce your Texas Holdem losses is to stop playing to protect your blinds. This is often the case in tourneys, but in higher limit games, some players feel compelled to protect the blind, especially if it is raised by another player.

Yet another instance wherein you can decrease your losses in Texas Holdem is to know when to lay down a made but beaten hand. If you are drawing to a Q high inside straight, and an Ace pops out on the turn and players raise, fold your hand. You are beaten by a higher straight.

These are some of the Texas Holdem strategies that you can use to try reduce the number of hands that you lose. They may seem basic, yet the fact is that most players ignore them. Keeping the losses down and you will be able to increase your winnings.
